Everyone at my stall has heard the word "AI" a hundred times, and most grown-ups still cannot explain it. Norman, the supercomputer Dad and I built, uses AI to help me design toys. Here is exactly what that means, no hype, no magic. Answer the quick check at the end of each lesson to earn a badge.
AI stands for artificial intelligence. It is not a robot brain and it is not alive. It is a computer program that got really good at spotting patterns after looking at a huge pile of examples, like millions of pictures or sentences. When you give it something new, it uses those patterns to make a guess: what word comes next, what a drawing of a dragon might look like, what answer fits your question.
It does not understand ideas the way you do. It does not know it is a dragon, or that dragons are cool. It is closer to an incredibly fast, incredibly practiced guesser than a thinking creature.

The Imaginator, which runs on Norman, is the part of my Lab that uses AI the most. You describe a toy, and it draws a real 3D model you could actually print. That part feels like magic. Here is the part that is not magic: I check and approve every single design myself before it ever gets sent to a printer. A person is always the last step. AI drafts, a kid decides.

You will hear that an AI was "trained on data." Here is the kid version: imagine you looked at a million drawings of dragons before you ever drew one yourself. You would start to notice patterns, like wings usually go on the back, and tails are usually long and curvy, without anyone ever writing you a rulebook. That is training. The AI is shown a gigantic number of examples, and it slowly adjusts itself until it gets good at matching the patterns it sees.
It is not looking answers up online in the moment, like a search engine does. It already "practiced" on those examples earlier, and now it is just using what it picked up. That is also why it can be wrong: it learned patterns, not guaranteed facts.

The most important thing I have learned running an AI-powered toy Lab: AI can be confidently wrong. It will answer in a totally sure-sounding way even when the answer is off, because it is guessing from patterns, not checking facts like a dictionary. That is exactly why a person always checks its work here, on every single toy design.
