How the Lab actually makes toys, explained by me, Joseph · Last updated August 26, 2026
People at my stall ask the same great question all day: how does that machine turn a spool of string into a dragon? Here is the whole thing, no secrets.
3D printer plastic comes as a long strand called filament, wound on a spool like really thick fishing line. The printer pulls the filament into a hot end, melts it at around 220°C, and squeezes it out of a tiny nozzle less than half a millimeter wide.

The nozzle draws one slice of the toy at a time, like a pen that never lifts. Each layer is about 0.2 mm tall, thinner than two sheets of paper. When one layer is done, the printer moves up a hair and draws the next one on top. A Classic Flexi Dragon is around 300 layers and takes a few hours. My Grand Silk Dragon takes most of a day.
A computer program called a slicer does the math: it takes a 3D model and chops it into all those layers, then writes the path the nozzle will follow. That is the boring-sounding part that is secretly the most important.
Here is the part that surprises grown-ups. The printer can leave tiny gaps on purpose. If I design a dragon whose body segments wrap around each other with a small gap between them, the printer builds all the segments at once, already linked, never touching. When the print finishes, the whole dragon bends straight off the plate. No screws, no glue, no assembly. That is called print-in-place, and it is why my flexi toys wiggle the moment you pick them up.

Mostly PLA, a plastic made largely from corn starch, which prints beautifully and comes in wild colors, glow, silk and sparkle. The see-through toys are PETG, the tougher cousin of water-bottle plastic. Every filament we use is from Bambu Lab, and the manufacturer safety documents for each one are published on our safety page. Quick honesty note from the safety page: 3D printed things are never food-safe, whatever plastic they use, because the layer grooves cannot be cleaned like a smooth cup. Toys are for hands, not mouths.
Four printers (the flagship prints two colors at once and does most of the dragons), an automatic material system that swaps colors mid-print, and a supercomputer Dad and I built that helps design new toys. There is a real printer running at every market stall, and most days the live cam shows a toy mid-print. Watching a dragon appear out of nothing is the best advertisement I have.
