From sketchbook to shop

too many spikes, try again
page one of the sketchbook

Every toy starts as a bad drawing. Mine especially.

I keep a sketchbook by the printer. When an idea shows up, a dragon with too many spikes, an axolotl that glows, I draw it fast before I forget the good part. Most sketches never become anything. That is fine. Some do.

Sketch to shape

rough sketch → clean 3D shape

The hard part is turning a flat drawing into something that can stand up and wiggle. That is where the Imaginator comes in, the AI toy maker on my website. I describe the creature, colors and all, and it draws a 3D version in about two minutes. I get to see the idea from every angle before I ever touch the printer.

The part nobody sees

Most first prints fail. A leg is too thin and snaps. A joint does not bend right. A whole print peels off the plate halfway through and I find a plastic spaghetti mess in the morning. That is normal. That is not the toy failing, that is the toy still being invented.

plastic spaghetti at 2am is just part of the job now.

When one finally comes off the plate and actually wiggles the way I imagined it, that is the best five seconds of my week.

Then it is real

After that it gets a name, a price, a spot at my table or in the shop. But it started as a bad drawing in a notebook that only I could read.

If you want to try the sketch-to-shape part yourself, the Imaginator is free to play with on the homepage. You will not believe how fast it draws.

Howdy. See you at the next market.
